Mike Zellers - CISS243 Blog

As instructor of CISS243, I am keeping my own journal, first of all, to give an example (a good one, I hope) of what I expect from the student journals, and as another way to share resources.

Forbes.com: The Coming RSS Revolution

i believe you can syndicate your site in blogger. were anyone to do that, it would make for a real cool blog and real cool blogs get lots of extra credit points...

it's been my experience - not just with this class, but with all others - that functions cause a lot of problems. i think people get them conceptually - i.e. why they are good, what they do, etc....but are a bit confused when it comes to implementing them. i am going to try to review them in more detail next week - and even will create a custom object that will allow us to call the same function from a few places - i think that might clear things up. any other suggestions about how to review this topic?

Hello. I am creating this blog for a couple of reasons: to provide my students with a resource, and to model what I expect in their blogs. I will try to follow the pattern of 2 posts a week: one reflective and one resource.

The biggest challenge I face at this point in the term is assisting everyone getting their machines at home configured to create ASP.NET web applications. This is a challenge as there can be so many things that can allow software to work on one machine and not another. I hate to sound like an old-timer, but this wasn't an issue when I was going to school. There was no possibility that everyone would have an IBM360 mainframe at home; one had to do the assignments in lab. I realize things aren't like that today - teaching, regardless of discipline, but especially technology requires me to adjust with the time and find innovative ways to help students resolve their issues. For example, I will try chat and posting resources that I think will help.
